What's Goin On? {War is NOT The Answer)
2022, Acrylic on wood panel, 24" x 24"
Marvin Gaye's 1971, "What's Going On?" for Tamla/Motown represents a major moment in pop music history. It marks a departure both for Gaye and for Motown from traditionally middle of the road, romantic themed material into the more soul searching, current day and topical territory. Motown head, Berry Gordy was skeptical of the direction his star was taking. The original jacket featured a solemn photo of the singer in the rain in black leather with minimal, elegant, type treatment. Though fitting in some ways, this cover art was not much of a departure for Motown, and didn't necessarily let on the depth of the material within. This "re-mix" painting seeks to accentuate the topical nature of the record incorporating hallmarks of the Neo-Pop/Graphic Design style that I have been working in. The imagery includes song lyrics and directly references the title song. Look for a subtle nod to one of the painters from whom I take a great deal of inspiration, Robert Indiana.
